Alabama Supreme Court Rejects English-Only Suit

Montgomery, AL – The state Supreme Court has rejected a challenge to Alabama's practice of giving the state driver's license written exam in multiple languages.

The justices upheld a lower court order that affirmed the current system on Friday.

A lawsuit filed against Gov. Bob Riley in 2008 claimed that the use of multiple languages violates the state constitution and the exam should be given in English only. The plaintiffs lost in Montgomery County Circuit Court and appealed to the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court affirmed the lower court order in a 5-0 decision issued without any written explanation.

The ruling marks the second time the Supreme Court has rejected lawsuits challenging the use of multiple languages on driver exams.
