Ala. Democrats Push Agenda Despite Minority Status

Montgomery, AL – Democrats in the Alabama House and Senate have promised to continue to fight for issues they consider important even though they are now in the minority.

Democrats from the House and Senate at a Wednesday news conference promised to fight for legislation to eliminate tax loopholes for out-of-state corporations, to take the state 4 percent sales tax off groceries, to ban smoking in public places in Alabama and to offer incentives to existing Alabama companies to keep workers on the job.

Republicans won majorities in the House and Senate in November. But Democratic Sen. Roger Bedford of Russellville said Republicans should not abuse the process. He complained that Republican leaders in the Senate moved too quickly Tuesday to cut off Democrats debating a bill pushed by the GOP.
