Judge Sets Hearing In AEA Suit Over Dues Deduction

Huntsville, AL – A federal judge in Huntsville has scheduled a hearing Tuesday on the Alabama Education Association's challenge of a new state law that threatens to interrupt AEA's dues.

The teachers' organization is asking U.S. District Judge Lynwood Smithy to issue a preliminary injunction or restraining order against a law passed by the new Republican-controlled Legislature in December. It prohibits public education employees from having any membership dues deducted from their paychecks if any of those dues go to political activity.

The lawsuit asserts that AEA will lose revenue and members if it is unable to collect dues through payroll deductions. AEA filed the suit against the governor and other state officials.

The hearing starts at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.
