Alabama Lawmaker Tries To Repeal Pay Raise

Montgomery, AL – Republican Rep. Paul Beckman of Prattville is trying two approaches to repeal the 61 percent pay raise the Legislature gave itself four years ago.

Beckman introduced a resolution Tuesday in the House that would revoke the raise. He also offered a proposed constitutional amendment that would let voters repeal the raise and set up pay commission to decide future legislative compensation issues.

The freshman legislator defeated a lawmaker who supported the pay raise in 2007. Beckman says legislators need to show they are willing to accept the same cuts they are imposing on teachers and state employees.

Beckman's legislation has gone to the House Internal Affairs Committee and his resolution to the House Rules Committee.
