Ala. GOP Moves Closer To Passing Photo ID Law

Montgomery, AL – Alabama's new Republican majority in the Legislature is one step away from passing a law requiring a photo ID to vote.

The Senate Constitution, Campaign Finance, Ethics and Elections Committee voted 5-1 Tuesday to approve a photo ID bill. Support came from Republicans and opposition from the committee's lone Democrat, Billy Beasley of Clayton. The bill cleared the House a week ago. All that's left is a vote by the Senate.

Committee Chairman Bryan Taylor says he expects it to go through the Senate on a party-line vote.

The bill was part of the Republican Party's 2010 campaign platform called ``Handshake with Alabama.'' If enacted, Alabama would become the ninth state to require a photo ID.
