US Supreme Court Asked To Stop Alabama Execution

Montgomery, AL – An Alabama death row inmate has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to stop his execution scheduled for Thursday evening at Holman Prison in Atmore.

Attorneys for William Glenn Boyd said in a petition filed Wednesday that the court should stop the execution because the jury that convicted Boyd recommended he be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The petition filed with the court says the trial judge violated rules set out by the Alabama Supreme Court and U.S. Supreme Court when he overrode the jury's recommendation and sentenced Boyd to death.

The 45-year-old Boyd was convicted of the 1986 kidnapping and shooting deaths of Fred and Evelyn Blackmon in Calhoun County.

Gov. Robert Bentley is considering a clemency petition asking him to stop Boyd's execution.
