Legislature Looking To Revise Alabama Constitution

Montgomery, AL – Gov. Robert Bentley says he will sign a resolution setting up an appointed commission to recommend ways to rewrite the Alabama Constitution.

The resolution by Republican Sen. Del Marsh of Anniston won approval in the Senate on Tuesday and in the House on Thursday. Bentley said Thursday he will sign the resolution because he supports making the Constitution better.

Marsh says the commission will address revisions to most articles in the nation's longest state constitution, but it won't tackle taxation and home rule for counties because they have blocked constitutional revision in the past.

Marsh says he's hopeful the Legislature can pass measures this session to remove segregation-era language from the Constitution and rewrite the articles on banking and corporations. Those changes would then go before Alabama voters.
