Pay Compensation Proposed For Alabama Legislature

Montgomery, AL – A state senator is proposing taking away the Legislature's power to set its own compensation and giving it to a commission.

Republican Sen. Phil Williams of Rainbow City introduced a proposed constitutional amendment Tuesday setting up a six-member commission that would include two legislators and four people appointed by state officials. The commission would determine the compensation for the Legislature before the start of each four-year term. It would also repeal the 61 percent raise the Legislature gave itself in 2007.

A co-sponsor of the legislation, Republican Sen. Bryan Taylor of Prattville, said some legislators who have opposed repealing the pay raise like the idea of having a commission set the pay.

The commission's decision on compensation would start with the new Legislature elected in 2014.
