Montgomery, AL – A spokeswoman for the Alabama attorney general's office says about 100 complaints about price gouging have been filed related to the April 27 tornado outbreak.
The spokeswoman, Joy Patterson, says concerns are primarily over the price of hotel rooms, gasoline and food, and tree removal services.
Alabama's state of emergency prohibits raising prices rapidly, generally by 25 percent or more above the average in the area within the past 30 days without a reasonable cause.
The penalty is a fine of up to $1,000. Continual violators may be prohibited from doing business in Alabama.
Cullman Mayor Max Townson said Thursday he pulled the business license of a tree-cutting service after finding that the owner did not do promised work.
