Montgomery, AL – A defense lawyer is trying to attack the credibility of a legislator who testified that indicted casino owner Milton McGregor tried to buy his vote with the promise of campaign contributions.
Defense lawyer Joe Espy got state Rep. Barry Mask to admit on the witness stand Monday that he enjoys playing poker with friends even though he traditionally opposes gambling legislation.
Espy also got Mask to acknowledge he has received a referral fee of at least $10,000 a year from lobbyist Steve Windom since 2004. Mask said he referred a computer company to Windom before being elected to the Legislature, and he's supposed to be paid as long as Windom represents the company. Espy said Windom has done work for the Poarch Creek Indians, whose casinos competed with McGregor's casino.
