Ala. Senator Says No Comment Now On Remark

Montgomery, AL – A state senator who referred to customers of Greenetrack casino as ``aborigines'' says it wouldn't be appropriate to comment because he's still under subpoena in Alabama's gambling corruption trial.

Republican state Sen. Scott Beason of Gardendale has been criticized since he testified in the trial last week about a tape he recorded for the FBI where he made the ``aborigines'' remark.

Beason issued a statement Wednesday saying he's anxious to discuss details of the case, including his own testimony, but it would be inappropriate until the trial is over.

State Democratic Party Chairman Mark Kennedy has called for Beason's resignation. The executive director of the Alabama Republican Party, T.J. Maloney, says the party doesn't condone racist behavior, but Beason should have the opportunity to explain his comments after the trial.
