Montgomery, AL – A former legislator who helped the FBI in its investigation of Statehouse corruption has testified that indicted state Sen. Harri Anne Smith told him that she thought Country Crossing casino owner Ronnie Gilley could back up his promise of campaign contributions.
The former legislator, Houston County District Judge Benjamin Lewis, is testifying for the second day Wednesday in Alabama's gambling corruption trial. Lewis testified that Smith encouraged him to attend a dinner where Gilley said one of his business associates could write Lewis a check to cover the cost of his re-election campaign.
Gilley has pleaded guilty to offering bribes to legislators and is expected to testify later.
