Ala. County Adds To Budget Citing Immigration Law

Mobile, AL – A county official in Mobile says she needs a bigger budget to deal with the fallout from Alabama's new immigration law.

The Mobile County Commission voted Monday to provide another $150,000 to License Commissioner Kim Hastie to buy equipment she says is needed because of the law.

Hastie says the law's requirements for proof of citizenship have caused long lines in her office. She says the money will be used to purchase dozens of additional scanners that will allow workers to make images of documents and store them on a computer electronically.

Hastie says about 20 percent of those seeking tags don't have a valid driver's license, meaning they must come in to her office and creating the additional work for employees.
