Official Warns Of Possible Sewer Rate Hike

Birmingham, AL – The court-appointed receiver in charge of the Jefferson County sewer system warns that rates for residents could rise dramatically in the coming months.

Receiver John S. Young says he's prepared to increase sewer rates by as much as 8.2 percent around Dec. 1.

Young added that he expects a much larger increase if state lawmakers don't help with a solution to the county's financial crisis.

Jefferson County is looking for a legislative fix for its $3.14 billion sewer debt crisis and the fiscal 2012 county general fund budget, which commissioners say needs another $40 million.
