Montgomery, AL – Alabama has pushed back the deadline for businesses to get their state and county privilege licenses because of difficulties with the state's tough new immigration law.
State Revenue Commissioner Julie Magee signed an order extending the deadline from Oct. 31 to Nov. 30. She said technical difficulties with the law made it hard for some businesses to get their licenses done on time.
The law requires individuals and general partnerships to provide proof of their legal residency before getting or renewing their business privilege and store licenses. Corporations are exempted.
The law has resulted in long lines at some county courthouses. The president of the Alabama Probate Judges Association, Crenshaw County Probate Judge Jim Perdue, said the month's waiver is a courtesy to citizens and license officials.
