Alabama Ethics Sponsor Wants Clearer Gift Guidance

Montgomery, AL – The legislative sponsor of Alabama's new ethics law wants the State Ethics Commission to give additional guidance about gifts for public employees, including teachers.

The law allows gifts of ``de minimis'' value. The commission issued an advisory opinion last week giving examples of what's permissible for students to give teachers, such as coffee mugs and other items of nominal value. State Sen. Bryan Taylor of Prattville sent the commission a letter Monday, asking if could set a dollar amount that's presumed to qualify under the law.

The commission's executive director, Jim Sumner, said he will send the letter to the five commission members, but the members felt they gave their best interpretation of the law last week.
