Montgomery, AL – It will be up to Alabama voters to decide in November whether to let certain businesses use income tax withholdings from employees for expansion or new construction.
The proposed constitutional amendment passed the House 65-22 Thursday, getting two more than the 63 votes needed to pass a constitutional amendment. The proposed amendment now goes to the Senate. It is being opposed by the Alabama Education Association, which believes it will take money earmarked for education.
Gov. Robert Bentley praised lawmakers for passing the measure, calling it a key element of his agenda to bring new jobs into Alabama and to retain jobs that are already here.
The governor said the bill would give the state an important tool to use in recruiting and retaining businesses.
