Judge In Gambling Trial Won't Dismiss Charges Of 5

Montgomery, AL – The judge in Alabama's gambling corruption trial has refused to dismiss any of the charges against five of the defendants.

U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson on Monday issued his ruling concerning state Sen. Harri Anne Smith, former Sens. Larry Means and Jim Preuitt, casino lobbyist Tom Coker and casino spokesman Jay Walker.

Thompson said he's still considering whether to dismiss five of the 10 charges against casino owner Milton McGregor. They involve one count of bribery and four of honest services fraud. The judge is expected to rule on those five charges before closing arguments begin Tuesday morning.

Court officials originally expected jury deliberations to begin Wednesday, but now they say a juror's appointment with a doctor may delay that until Thursday.
