IRS Warns Alabamians Of Bogus Tax Refund Scheme

Birmingham, AL – The Internal Revenue Service is warning Alabamians against a scam that promises an inapplicable education tax credit in exchange for a high fee.

Scammers claim that people can get a stimulus payment or tax credit to help pay for college, even if the applicant has never been to college or graduated decades ago. The agency says con artists are targeting seniors, people with very low incomes and members of church congregations with false promises of free money.

IRS spokesman Dan Boone says the scam is similar to ones identified in Alabama last summer. The scheme is under investigation.

Bogus refund claims have also happened in California, Georgia, Michigan, Louisiana and Indiana.
