Selma, AL – About 200 demonstrators protesting Alabama's voter photo ID and immigration laws finished the first 11-mile leg of their 50-mile march from Selma to Montgomery on Monday.
The Rev. Al Sharpton, whose National Action Network helped organize the march, said Monday he felt energized after spending the night camped out on a cot. He says he expects to be joined by thousands when the march ends Friday in Montgomery with a rally at the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church.
The Rev. Jesse Jackson also marched along U.S. 80. He says the Selma to Montgomery march is central in a struggle to open up the country.
Alabama State Patrol spokesman Trooper John Reese says marchers sang, chanted and banged drums, but otherwise stayed out of trouble.
