Many Inmates Transferred From Storm-Damaged Prison

Montgomery, AL – State officials say many of inmates from a tornado-damaged correctional facility in northern Alabama have been transferred to other facilities.

Alabama Department of Corrections Commissioner Kim Thomas on Friday announced the transfer of 200 inmates from the Limestone Correctional Facility in Harvest.

Authorities say a tornado skirted the facility around 9:30 a.m. on March 2. The storm was among several that destroyed homes and buildings across the South.

State officials say the correctional facility sustained significant damage to the roofing on Cell Blocks C and D, a canteen, a training facility, the K-9 kennel, and other areas of the prison including perimeter fencing. Authorities say a timeframe for repairs is not yet known.

There were no major injuries to inmates or staff.
