Coastal residents of Alabama and Mississippi are bracing for a glancing blow from Hurricane Ida, which still has Louisiana as its primary target. The National Hurricane Center has Tropical Storm and storm surge warnings in effect from Biloxi to Mobile and Baldwin Counties. Forecasters say Ida’s course has inched eastward, meaning the possibility of damage from the rougher and wetter eastern side of the storm for Mississippi and Alabama. The threat stretches into Monday and Tuesday as Ida moves northeast through Louisiana, including heavy rain, flooding, and the possibility of tornadoes from Mobile to as far north as Tuscaloosa and northwestern Alabama. Governor Kay Ivey put twenty seven counties under a State of Emergency, which includes a warning against price gouging.
APR's Gulf coast correspondents are following this story. Guy Busby and Lynn Oldshue have reported on the ongoing process of recovery from 2020 Hurricanes Sally and Zeta, while the 2021 season threatened this year. Guy and Lynn also helped APR win its 4th national Sigma Delta Chi award. They contributed content for our documentary on the 10th anniversary of the BP Gulf Oil spill.
