Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has officially called a special session focused on deciding how to spend pandemic relief funds.

Lawmakers begin meeting Wednesday to plan how to use $580 million remaining in the state's first installment from the American Rescue Plan. The main areas that could see the money put to use are water and sewer projects, healthcare costs and broadband expansion.

The state already used 20% of the total $2.1 billion allocation last year, spending $400 million on prison construction.
