Anthony "Alann" Johnson is leading the race to become the Democratic nominee for House District 53 in Birmingham.
Al.com reports that Johnson pulled away from attorney Arthur Shores Lee as the final boxes were counted in the Democratic runoff.
With 23 of 24 precincts reporting Tuesday night, Johnson had 297 votes, or 56 percent of the vote, to Lee's 236 votes, or 44 percent.
Lee is telling aL.com that he is not ready to concede. He wants to wait until absentee ballots are counted.
Johnson is a nonprofit director. Lee is an attorney and the grandson of prominent civil rights attorney Arthur Shores.
The seat became vacant when Rep. Demetrius Newton died in September.
The winner will face Republican Willie "W.A." Casey in the March 25 general election.
