MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Speaker of the House Mike Hubbard says he believes politics are behind a public corruption probe that resulted in one Republican lawmakers' plea deal and another's indictment. Hubbard calls the investigation an attempt to undermine upcoming legislative elections. Hubbard didn't say whom he accuses of acting on political motivation. The investigation is led by a retired Republican district attorney serving as attorney general in the case. Former Rep. Greg Wren of Montgomery pleaded guilty in April to a misdemeanor ethics violation. Rep. Barry Moore of Enterprise faces perjury charges over his grand jury testimony. A special grand jury was convened last summer in Lee County by the attorney general's office. The probe's direction is unclear but the panel met earlier this month. The attorney general's office declined to comment.
