Montgomery, AL – Gov. Bob Riley has signed a new law raising the minimum age to drop out of high school in the state from 16 to 17.
The law, which Riley signed Monday, requires that a student must attend an exit interview with a school administrator and a parent or guardian before dropping out.
They also will have to sign a document showing that they understood the consequences of leaving school early.
The new law was sponsored by Sen. Arthur Orr, a Republican from Decatur. It takes effect with the upcoming school year.
