How did NPR become a ground breaker for female journalists? It may not be why you think. Nina Totenberg recalls in a Newsweek article that it was a combination of the open hostility toward hiring women from other news organizations and the low pay NPR offered.
Totenberg, Cokie Roberts, Linda Wertheimer (2nd from left here) and Susan Stamberg soon became NPR's earliest stars. They sat together in a corner or the newsroom that the men called “the fallopian jungle.” Now they are known as as NPR's Founding Mothers. I think you will agree with me that I'm thankful NPR got them.
