Democrats To Try Again To Remove State's Grocery Sales Tax

Montgomery, AL – Democrats in the Alabama House plan to try for the fourth time this session to remove the state's 4 percent sales tax from groceries.

It appears unlikely the move Tuesday on the House floor will succeed. Republican leaders oppose the bill because it would raise income taxes on some wealthy taxpapers, and neither Democrats nor the GOP are expected to compromise.

Supporters of the measure sponsored by Democratic Rep. John Knight of Montgomery have failed three times to get the three-fifths vote required to bring it up for debate.
