Ala. Troopers Leave As 2 Casino Raids Fizzle

Dothan, AL – State troopers who massed outside two Alabama bingo operations in the dark of early morning have now left as raids planned by the governor's antigambling task force fizzled.

VictoryLand at Shorter reopened Friday as more than 100 state police drove off after a judge blocked the raid. And at Country Crossing in Dothan, more than 100 troopers pulled out after the task force was unable to get a search warrant.

Country Crossing operators said the troopers were trespassing and gave them written notices shortly before noon saying they must leave. The Dothan Eagle reports the troopers left the complex without comment and regrouped nearby at a highway rest area.

Task force chief John Tyson has asked the Alabama Supreme Court to clear the way for raids at both casinos. He contends the electronic bingo machines are illegal.
