Judge Says Indicted Senator Can't Leave Alabama

Montgomery, AL – A federal judge has denied a request by an indicted state senator to let her go to political functions outside the state and visit her beach house in Seagrove, Fla.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Terry Moorer turned down the request Friday from independent state Sen. Harri Anne Smith of Slocomb. She was one of 11 people arrested Oct. 4 on charges accusing them of buying and selling votes on pro-gambling legislation. One condition of her $100,000 unsecured bond was that she not leave Alabama.

Smith had asked permission to leave if she notified officers of her plans. She said her work in the Senate involves out-of-state meetings and that she has in the past made regular weekend trips to Seagrove, about 70 miles from her home. But Moorer denied her request without explanation.
