Montgomery, AL – The Alabama Department of Human Resources is launching a program that will allow residents of designated disaster areas to receive food assistance beginning Tuesday.
The department says current recipients of food assistance who haven't received the maximum benefit for May will automatically receive the maximum amount of what's commonly called ``food stamps.'' These recipients do not need to apply.
People who don't receive food assistance may qualify based on income, property damage and other disaster expenses. They must apply in their home counties and must have IDs.
The Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is starting in the first eight counties to get disaster declarations: Cullman, DeKalb, Franklin, Jefferson, Lawrence, Marshall, Tuscaloosa and Walker. The department says other counties that were designated disaster areas will be added in coming weeks.
