Defense Lawyers In Gambling Trial Attack FBI Probe

Montgomery, AL – Defense attorneys in Alabama's gambling corruption trial are attacking the thoroughness of the FBI's investigation.

During cross-examination Friday, defense attorneys asked a leader of the FBI investigation whether he had read the original version of the pro-gambling legislation that prompted its investigation of vote buying. Agent John McEachern answered that he had not.

Defense lawyers asked if he had read the final version of the bill that passed the Senate last year. The agent said he may have skimmed it, but didn't read it completely.

U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson told the jury that the FBI is not on trial.

The trial will recess Friday afternoon for a three-day holiday weekend and resume Tuesday.
