Montgomery, AL – Parishioners of Mount Zion A-M-E Zion Church in Montgomery are trying to save their 135-year-old building. The church's northern tower is where the Montgomery Improvement Association was formed. Martin Luther King Junior was named president of the group, and it served as headquarters for the Montgomery bus boycott. It's listed on the Alabama Historical Commission's "Places in Peril" and on the National Register of Historic Places. But experts say that recognition does not protect it from demolition. The church needs expensive repairs, but parishioners say there just isn't enough money in their budget to fix it.
