Montgomery, AL – Interim state schools superintendent Joe Morton could find out Tuesday if he'll be promoted to the position permanently. The board is expected to announce a decision about conducting a national search for the job. Morton could be directly appointed as permanent superintendent, or he could be a candidate in a national search. Several state school board members said last month they want Morton to replace Ed Richardson. The 57-year-old has been interim superintendent since Richardson left the job in January to take over as interim president of Auburn University. Richardson himself says Morton is the right person to lead state schools. Morton was passed over for the job in favor of Richardson nine years ago. Richardson then chose Morton as his deputy superintendent.
