Alabama Doctor Starts Group to Fight Meth Epidemic

By Alabama Public Radio

Albertville, AL – An Alabama doctor has started a group to fight methamphetamine. Albertville obstetrician Mary Holley says about 10 percent of her pregnant patients are addicted to the drug. Holley says the meth epidemic also became a personal crusade when her brother Jim shot and killed himself four years ago after a struggle with a meth addiction. The group she founded is called Mothers Against Methamphetamine. It already has chapters here in Alabama...as well as in Tennessee, Georgia, Oklahoma, Missouri and Ohio. Holley says her Web site also gets about six-thousand hits a month. Mothers Against Meth is working with churches to start addiction support groups.
