Birmingham, AL – A new study shows that Alabama's largest city still economically trails most other American cities. Birmingham's ranked 73rd out of 86 cities...based on an inner city hardship index. That index looked at numbers for income, poverty, unemployment, overcrowded housing and low education. Researchers say there is less economic hardship in Birmingham today than there was 30 years ago. They also say...nationally...urban areas have less hardship than they did just four years ago. Researchers at the Nelson A. Rockefeller Institute of Government in New York based their findings on U.S Census data.
