Gay Marriage Ban One Step Closer to Passing

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – A proposed amendment to the state Constitution that would ban gay marriage could move within one step of final passage in the Legislature Wednesday. The House and Senate have both passed versions of the amendment. The Senate version of the bill will be considered at 9 a.m. Wednesday by the House Constitution and Elections Committee. If the measure is approved by the House committee, it could receive final passage as early as next week. The amendment would also have to be approved in a statewide referendum. The bill currently schedules the referendum for the next special election or for the party primary elections in 2006.
