State Trooper Injured in Shootout

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – Department of Public Safety spokesperson Martha Earnhardt has confirmed that a state trooper was wounded Thursday afternoon. She says an inmate was being transported by a Saint Clair County deputy when the inmate overpowered the deputy in Chilton County. The deputy was injured in the attack. Earnhardt says the inmate then took the deputy's patrol vehicle and began driving south on I-65. Authorities pursued the vehicle, and the chase ended with a shoot-out on I-65 in Montgomery. A state trooper was injured and the inmate was killed. Earnhardt says the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the Montgomery Police Department are investigating.
