60-Year-Old Novice Injured in Plane Crash

By Alabama Public Radio

Altoona, AL – An Altoona man was injured in a plane crash Wednesday morning in the Asbury community near Albertville. Edgar Howard was listed in fair condition at Huntsville Hospital Wednesday afternoon. The 60-year-old was piloting an experimental aircraft called an ultralight at the time of the crash. Eddie Spain owns the runway Howard was using. Spain says the plane climbed to about 40 or 50 feet before stalling. He says the wing then hit the ground, and the plane cartwheeled. Spain also says Howard was just learning to fly. Marshall County Sheriff's Department investigator Stan Baggett says officials with the Federal Aviation Administration have already examined the crash site. He says the FAA's investigation is expected to continue for several weeks.
