Large Peanut Crop Expected This Year

By Alabama Public Radio

Undated – Alabama's peanut growers are expected to contribute to a record crop this year. American peanut farmers are projected to produce five-point-one billion pounds this year. But when combined with another 430-thousand pounds left over from last year's crop, there's worry about how that many peanuts will be sold. Some people say export prices should be lower to boost foreign sales. The U-S-D-A controls the export price, which is 337 dollars per ton. The industry has been calling for a lower posted price for months to make U-S peanuts more competitive with peanuts from Argentina, Brazil and China. Some say 250 dollars per ton would make American peanuts competitive.
