Birmingham, AL – Sonny Brasfield of the Association of County Commissions of Alabama says county jails now house one thousand, 153 state prisoners. 644 of them have been in county jails more than 30 days, which violates a longstanding court order. The commissioners have sent a resolution to the state asking for an immediate solution. The resolution asks the governor to call a special session of the Legislature, if necessary, to develop long-term solutions. Governor Riley has appointed a Task Force on Prison Overcrowding and is awaiting its recommendations.
