Birmingham, AL – Friday was an historic day in the history of journalism in Birmingham. The city lost its afternoon paper. The Birmingham Post-Herald issued its last edition Friday. Jim Willis, editor and president of the Post-Herald, said it was a sad day, and he hopes the community remembers the newspaper fondly. The newspaper has been a fixture in Birmingham since 1950. It has been the city's afternoon daily since 1996. E-W Scripps owns the paper and told employees Thursday that this would be the last week for the Post-Herald. Willis says he wants to help his employees find jobs, and he says he's encouraged by phone calls from across the country about potential opportunities.
