Mobile, AL – Chastang says he apologized to Riley for not disclosing that the county Personnel Board in 1993 suspended him from his job as a Mobile police officer after determining that he tried to bribe an other officer. Chastang left his teaching job Blount High School after his appointment Tuesday and says the allegation wasn't true. He also had not been living in the district until renting a duplex apartment there in June. A local law states a commissioner must live in the district he represents. Also, another legal challenge to Chastang's appointment has been filed. The suit claims the Riley appointment is invalid because Riley should have gotten approval from the U.S. Department of Justice, which must sign off on any change in voting procedure. The commission vacancy came open when Commissioner Sam Jones was elected Mobile mayor.
