Campbell Says More Beds Needed in Prisons

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – The president of the Association of County Commissions, Buddy Sharpless, says there is no money in the governor's proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year to provide those additional beds. Alabama's counties have sued the state for not removing inmates from county jails. A judge is considering whether to hold Campbell in contempt. Sharpless and Campbell spoke to the Legislature's joint committee on prisons yesterday. Campbell told the lawmakers eight sentencing reform bills could provide long-term relief but will not help him remove the more the 700 state prisoners who have been in county jails beyond the 30-day court ordered limit.
