Mobile, AL – At Thursday's news conference announcing his retirement, Tillman says he has achieved his goals in public service. Tillman was elected sheriff in 1994 after spending 16 years as a resource officer in the Mobile County school system. A Mobile County grand jury in April indicted Tillman on two counts of perjury, one count of using his office for personal gain and two counts of theft involving the jail food fund. A trial date has not been set. Six candidates have already announced plans to run for sheriff: Mobile Police Chief Sam Cochran, sheriff's Deputy Kyle Callaghan, Robert Charles Hartmann, Matt Tew, Clint Ulmer and Harry Bachus Junior. Chief Deputy Mark Barlow says he expects to enter the race soon. Tillman endorsed Barlow's candidacy.
