New State Laws Take Effect Saturday

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery AL – A set of new state laws take effect on Saturday. One new law will require children to be in a rear-facing car seats until they are 1-year-old or weigh 20 pounds. Then, children must ride in forward facing seats until they are 5 or weigh 40 pounds ... and in booster seats until they turn 6. They must also wear seat belts until the age of 15. Violations will bring a 15-dollar ticket which can be waived if the motorist buys and installs the proper seat. Other new laws taking effect on Satuday are the "move over law", which will require motorists on highways of four lanes or more to move over one lane when approached by a flashing emergency vehicle. Another new law will repeal a ban on K-thru-12 students bringing cellphones, pagers or similar devices to school. The new law allows each school system to set its own policy. Yet another new law prohibits state agencies from revealing a person's Social Security number on public documents.
