By Alabama Public Radio

Undated, AL – Alabama and other southeastern states are attracting immigrants at a faster pace than any other region of the country. According to U-S Census data, Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia saw their foreign-born populations jump by more than a third from 2000 to 2005. Most of the increases occurred because Hispanic immigrants from countries such as Mexico and Guatemala have been coming to the region. Alabama saw its immigrant population jump from 87-thousand-772 people in 2000 to 120-thousand-773 in 2005. That's up 38 percent.
