Lowndes County Commission Delays Landfill Vote

By Alabama Public Radio

Hayneville, AL – The Lowndes County Commission still has not publicly revealed its position on a controversial landfill project. Dozens of citizens packed a courtroom in Hayneville yesterday because they thought the commission would decide the project's fate. However, the plan was temporarily tabled. Commission Chairman Charlie King says last minute changes in the contract with Alabama River Partners led to the decision. The company wants to build a landfill near Burkville that would hold construction and demolition debris that is shipped from hurricane-damaged areas on the Gulf Coast. A vote could be taken at the county commission's next meeting, which is scheduled for Monday night at 6:30.
