Montgomery, AL – Two men whose testimony helped convict former Governor Don Siegelman on corruption charges were in court Tuesday morning for their own sentencing hearing. Former Siegelman aide Nick Bailey and landfill developer Lanny Young appeared before a federal judge in Montgomery. Both Bailey and Young testified against Siegelman earlier this year after agreeing to plead guilty to corruption charges. Jurors convicted Siegelman and former HealthSouth chief Richard Scrushy of bribery and conspiracy, based at least in part on some of that testimony. In 2003, Bailey and Young pleaded guilty to bribery and other charges involving several schemes, including a state warehouse project to be built by a company secretly owned by Young. Young later pleaded guilty to bribing a former Cherokee County probate judge in a separate deal. Prosecutors are recommending lighter sentences for both men because of their assistance in the Siegelman case.
