Board Recommends Limiting Deer Kills

By Associated Press

Birmingham, AL – A state advisory board has recommended a change in Alabama's conservation law that would limit hunters to killing only three male deer during the upcoming season in hope of the state producing bigger, better bucks.

The Conservation Advisory Board voted seven-to-two last weekend in favor of a three-buck limit for Alabama deer hunters for the 2007-2008 season.

The proposal, which still must be approved by Conservation Commissioner Barnett Lawley to take effect, would replace a decades-old law that lets hunters take one buck per day during the hunting season. There would be no change in doe limits.

Under the plan, Alabama deer hunters could kill three bucks a season, and two would not be subject to any size restriction. The third buck must have four points on at least one side of its antlers.

The proposal did not outline how the measure will be enforced.

Hunting season on private land is set to open November 17 and extend through January 31.
